OK, I discovered another key deep in a container. I removed that and then grabbed the key again. Seems to be working for now.

The shadow's claw does On Monster Hit: Ability Drain Strength so it may have been draining the strength of the ogre but not doing physical damage. More testing may be needed?

holy water
healing wands
one of the 10000 FREE flowers that can be used against undead

Race is not set as plant on all topiary creatures. Shouldnt be able to AE/tame them any more.
