Lower the potion prices.

The idea was to avoid the "potion meta" where everyone drinks an ocean of potions every time they see a goblin

The low xp payout for quests makes your XP more valuable; you're going to get a 'defend the xp' meta no matter what you do. Potions are how we do that.
I have an abundance of play time and it's still taken me almost a month to get anywhere near ten and I know what I'm doing. I can't imagine it for people who don't have the time or familiarity with the engine.
Robbing people of the tools to protect what they have only makes it less fun to play. Low/No-payout DM events don't help that either.
If you want to make things punishing on players, that's fine, but giving them no tools to counteract situations they find themselves in leaves us in situations where you're throwing tanglefoot bags at npc's with +15 reflex save, it doesn't make things enjoyable from a player side.
-
The big problem is this; you're not going to consider every combat encounter as 'can I win it?' anymore. We are now looking at it as 'can I afford this or do I need to avoid, avoid, avoid at all costs?'
This is how I see DM events now. 'Can I afford to have fun or do I need to grind out the quests again or stand around or getting crafting materials for prestige to pass time for my wage to get potions?'

I have a seriously crazy idea! I have a character that bakes, most of the baked goods do what potions do but no one buys them for what I've been told are weight concerns. I also brew potions that no one seems to want to buy. To me you have cheaper alternatives than the potion vendors.
-
@crazyzleric If I knew weights I'd do more with this - lemme check crafting forums.
-
Objects with a 'unique use' property can only be used once per round, no matter how many APR you have.
Potions are just flat out better. >_>
-
Potions are flat out better, yes.
-
Most baked goods weight 0.3-0.5 compared to potions 0.1.
I have a hot take that the potion vendor should vanish! so the bakers and potions crafters get money and make a player based economy rather that the "Drinking the alchemist" store meta syndrome
-
No, Thats a bad idea
They take up way more inventory space and encumberance is a thing
-
Id LOVE for the potion vendors to either vanish or TRIPLE in price. So it is available but hard to come by. Have each faction offer potions themed for them at a discount but otherwise, id say tripple the npc vendors.
-
Again thats just a plain bad idea
Tripling the prices would just make the game unplayable
Serious healing is already 120 per potion, at 360 you'd be at a loss even using one on anything but a 7 to 10 where you'd be at a loss on 2
-
@v-rage Thus as a potion maker, healing potions being simple to make I can make potions at half the price of vendors, the catch is I can only produce so many in a time span where you can just go and buy as many as you want from the vendor. So you HAVE options to get cheaper potions if you ask around for player potion makers
-
@v-rage the point is that right now we have ZERO player economy. And we need it. Makes the server ten times better.

In theory.
In practice, you can't find the right crafter online, so are screwed.
It would need to be combined with custom shops for players, which is a whole thing, and could end up with potions being way cheaper than they are now.
-
Then theres the fact not everyone likes the crafting system
-
This is being looked into
-
The lack of a player economy sucks.
Hardcore.
But forcing people to use a fairly obtuse crafting system to get the most essential of supplies is a horrible way to build investment or interest. You'll just drive more people off.
-
@arcanigans well it's either that or Dumping fortunes into supply meta returns. Which is a meta I personally hate
-
@arcanigans Also thank you for bringing that point up! The crafting system is SO grindy and the gates to make anything sellable or profitable in some regards that most players don't want to do it!

Strong disagree. Crafting as it stands is far outclassed by basic roleplaying, DM loot, faction loot, and pretty much everything else.
