Exhaustion rules for example. This allows people to rest at their own peril. They can rest without proper gear, but they will receive penalties.

    Fatigued
A fatigued character can neither run nor charge and takes a -2 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. Doing anything that would normally cause fatigue causes the fatigued character to become exhausted. After 8 hours of complete rest, fatigued characters are no longer fatigued.

    Exhausted
An exhausted character moves at half speed and takes a –6 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. After 1 hour of complete rest, an exhausted character becomes fatigued. A fatigued character becomes exhausted by doing something else that would normally cause fatigue.

Personally I rather just say people need to have a bedroll and fire

I think what Gumba wants is more realistic personally.

I don't want realism, I think I should be able to sleep if I want, as per ruling of all D&D 3.0, 3.5, 4 and 5e, and have to face the consequences of not having the items that would prevent penalties... This became quite clear to me in the quest area we were yesterday. Spent some good hour and a half into it OOC and my companion rested several times, I had no bedroll but would eagerly rest one time with penalties given in order to try to survive.

Ended up abusing mechanics of going invisible and running to save my life.

                I had no bedroll

An easy fix that doesnt require any extra scripting

You can also ask to borrow your companions bedroll

What kind of a person sleeps in someone elses bedroll? Ew
