      As the title suggests.

There's so much RP potential and cool stuff that could be done with such a simple tool-- investing in 'heirloom' weapons with a history that belongs to a character and gets passed around, stolen, or whatever else.

And I don't mean appending it to stuff like 'Iron Sword - [name here]'. Most people are going to understand by looking at the stats that 'yep, that's an iron sword'. Also, most people that go deep into this crafting stuff aren't going to give them overly silly descriptions as it is-- the huge time investment isn't worth being a troll about.

100% support this - I think tools like this in the hands of the player ultimately add more than they could detract.

Sure, one in twenty might make some joke dumb item that gets them a stern look from a DM, but so many more will just add to a great amount of roleplay and fun - players should be trusted to not be stupid, and help make fantastic stories through tools like these

As much as some people seem to dislike anything crafting-related, I think this is such a cool idea! If there are concerns about abuse, maybe tie this to some kind of special tool that could be earned in game / applied for?

While I do think this would be cool to implement, I suppose it would depend on how hard it is to code on whether the DM team wants to actually deal with it or not. Unless some generous person wants to volunteer to do it.

I know of several servers that use a writing tool (I believe Arabel used to as well!) that allowed for the changing of descriptions and names. Arabel used it only for books but I believe with some amount of effort the same thing could be used for any item (though obviously would require trust in the players who got the tools as SilverSquirrel says).

You're able to rename containers and blood vials using your player tool already too. So the features exist, just not for crafted items.

I do agree it would add more to RP than it would take away; I think the less players need to rely on DM loot for neat legacy items, the happier everyone will be.

Also, Echo has put a tonnnn of work into the crafting system. Why not push it to make it even more awesome?

                  @arcanigans deja vu? https://nodebb.cityofarabel.com/topic/55109/allow-the-changing-description-of-crafted-items

Yes it can be nice, but unfortunately, it can be really abused. Not just talking about improper names for items (Johnny's Vorpal Sword +5). Players could name items after faction items or even after plot items which could/would cause all sorts of issues in game. Also, it's probably gonna be more annoying for DMs when looking over the gear of players (yes, we do that). We'd hover over the armor, for example, and see some name we don't recognize (holy armor of the champion, or whatever) and then inspect it only to discover it's just plain iron armor.

As I said when you suggested this previously, I may look at adding a "crafted by" line in crafted gear, but keep in mind there are nearly 1500 1000 (i took out an estimate of alchemy stuff) recipes that will need to be edited if we do this. It is a very low priority for me at the moment.

Rules regarding the new ability to change item name/descriptions:

                    1. Item must contain the material in the name. (Example: Iron Sword of Spice, Frederick's Copper Blade). This is so that DMs can glance over the item name without having to go into the description to see what it does every time.
                    2. Items cannot be made with colored names. Only plot items henceforth will have colored names. You are not allowed to rename plot items.
                    3. Descriptions must be kept to less than three paragraphs.
                    4. Descriptions of items must not contradict their actual appearances or use.
                    5. You are not allowed to rename items to read as faction gear.

I think making it a tool for trusted players is a far easier workaround than adding a line of code to 1000+ items. The more trust players are afforded, the better, I think - we've been playing this game a very long time, I feel as if even if it isn't a rolled out thing everyone can access, if someone shows the same care and trust to be given it, they should have it same as any other EiG or Application based shenanigans.

The rules above seem good !!

Yes, that is how I feel about it, too. It can be abused but some trust could be extended to players who really earn this.
