I can support the idea but nerf the items. He wants to play an unarmed paladin using only cloth but keep the same stats as a fully armored pally, I can't really see the downside.

I'm fine giving a weaker version of the items and upgrade as he goes. Like, +5-6 armor, 1d6-8 gloves.

I am thinking DR loin cloth (+1 -5) and some damage immunity perhaps? 1d4 damage gloves as well.

@SpiffyMeister I'm ok even with stronger items than that. But something that would still make him weaker than equivalent monks. If he commits to the char and makes it awesome we upgrade it.
